Food Storage

I'm sure with this title you are probably thinking you don't really want to read this post. Who wants to hear about food storage? Well, I do. I was introduced to a new way of storing my food. Well organized and yummy things to eat. Go HERE to see this blog. You can also find segments of her presentation on You Tube! Well worth the watch. I don't have everything I need yet for my food storage but I have it all organized and know EXACTLY what I need to have a full year's supply. Not to mention I don't feel like it's weighing me down worried about if I have enough or what I'm going to make with all that wheat or the worst, ROTATING.

Anyway the point of all this is that one of the ideas she has is to have a solar oven in case of an emergency. You can bake jar cakes in the oven. Put the lid on and they will seal and they can sit on your shelf and stay fresh for a LONG LONG LONG time. That way on a day that the sun is not out and you can't cook with your oven you have cakes already made from when the sun WAS shining. Well, I don't have my solar oven yet but we decided to try out the jar cakes in the regular oven. The girls thought it was great, of course. Who wouldn't want cake?

First we made the batter (just a box mix.)

Second you have to coat the jar with crisco to keep the cake from sticking.

Third: You fill the jars about 1/2 way and bake it. After they come out of the oven put the lid on and in a few minutes they seal. Easy Peasy.

The verdict: The girls ate it all!

OK I'm SO cracking up at the below posts about the girls. They are hilarious!

Come on I came to your blog this morning for the political wrath of Casey and I was so disappointed. It was hard to get out of bed this morning so annoyed and couldn't stop watching the news. You'll be proud I'm going to my first caucus tomorrow night! WOO HOO!

You forgot to point out that your supposed to use unflavored gelatin in place of the egg for the jar cakes so they don't spoil. Typical me--I ordered a big five pound bag of it, but haven't made any jarcakes yet. Also bought a solar oven--haven't used that yet either. I really need to get with it. My daughters are making me look soooo bad.

Thanks all. Hope you enjoy watching the videos. This woman is awesome.
Mom, thanks for the correction. I didn't do the geletin - just wanted to make sure I could do the cakes first. One step at a time is all I can handle.

Jean, I'm so proud of you. Enjoy the caucus. I'm planning on going to the Tea Party again on April 15th here in WS. I debated whether or not to post something. I too was SOOO disappointed. I can't imagine what those dems did to get the votes, I'm sure deals and threats were involved. Just wait. My mom just sent me a very uplifting quote that I'm going to post so hopefully that will help us all. Let me know how the caucus goes and what you think. I knew you'd come around someday. Just don't get too addicted like myself.
